I'm a Caregiver.
Now What?

Throughout this website, you will learn about my personal caregiving experience with my mom; an experience that I was not ready for when I started on my caregiving journey.

I am NOT AN EXPERT in caregiving. But, you will find links to external sites where experts provide professional services that may help you. My experience will not match yours, but many aspects of personal caregiving will be similar.

Why Do This

Becoming a caregiver for my elderly mother was unexpected, overwhelming, incredibly stressful and life changing. My goal was to keep her safe, comfortable, as healthy as possible all while meeting her needs. It is an understatement to say that this task was incredibly difficult.

For you, caring for an aging parent, a spouse, or another family member, may be a different experience altogether. In any case, stepping into the role of a caregiver will cause many emotions and often more than one emotion at the same time.

On this website, I’ll cover what I learned and experienced while caring for mom. I will include everything from getting access to her finances, to learning about her health, finding an Assisted Living facility, navigating the Medicaid nightmare and much more. On pages that cover a specific topic, I’ll briefly share what I experienced and then share information about services I found including links to websites if one is available.

Medical History

Knowing your aging loved one's full medical history is critical to their well being. You will be asked for a medical history when taking your loved one to the emergency room, doctor's office or other medical facility that requires this information. This is a tough area because your loved one's medical history may contain sensitive information they may not want you to know.

There are federal laws that protect medical history. You should familarize yourself with these laws to protect your aging loved one.
